FOREST AND SUSTAINABILITY

Cork is manually removed using traditional tools, minimizing environmental impact and improving the tree's health. As a testament to the success of our methods, not only are cork forests flourishing, but also the total farming area with cork oaks is expanding annually. Oak forests remove remove CO2 (greenhouse gas) from the air as they grow. Cork forests in Portugal are diversified, with healthy habitats, and supporting a wide variety of plants and animals, including endangered species, such as the Iberian lynx.

The cork is processed in Portugal at the MASilva3 facilities, in the heart of the Alentejo forest, where it grows, minimizing shipping costs and the carbon footprint later on. The water used at the facilities for boiling the cork is recycled and filtered, and our patented cleaning an sterilization processes never involve chlorine or alcohol. One of our vital responsibilities at MASilva involves actively fostering sustainable forestation practices throughout southern Portugal. The districts in the Alentejo and the Algarve provide a near-perfect combination of climate and soil. More cork-oak trees grow in this region than in any other region on the planet, producing over 50% of the world's cork.
