MASILVA has operated in the cork industry for over 45 years, exploiting synergies between nature and industry, committed to becoming an industry benchmark at product quality level, customer service, technological innovation and mindful of sustainable development. Marked by continuous growth supported by new physical and human structures, MASILVA reaffirms its entrepreneurship by being bold and serious-minded in the marketing of its product, the natural cork stopper. Having ensured the company’s leading position for the future through its management succession plan, the largest challenge now is to expand to new geographies and make the customer realize the value added brought by the natural cork and set MASILVA brand as a model in the cork industry.
(Founder and President)
The MASilva group was incorporated in 1972 by Manuel Alves da Silva, its current Executive President, as a company dedicated to the manufacture of cork stoppers. This is a family-run group with a strong financial dynamic and in-depth knowledge of the cork production sector.
In 1975, Manuel Alves da Silva began to export to France, trading with local importers. In 1995, the group invested in a company laboratory to meet the demands of every market in which it operates. In 1999, Manuel Alves da Silva invested in creating a company dedicated to the production of technical stoppers made of cork, hence the emergence of M. A. Silva 2 - Cortiças, S.A.
In 2000, the company expanded again its overseas activity, setting up a local cork-finishing facility in the United States, MASilva Corks USA, LLP.
In 2002 MASilva France S.A.S. was incorporated as a strong investment in the German market, through an exclusive agent with a significant market presence. In 2004, as markets evolved, it made ever more sense to vertically integrate the production chain, and so a considerable investment was made in establishing M. A. Silva 3 - Cortiças, S.A.
In 2005 and 2007, respectively, the company obtained the ISO 22000 standard and purchased gas chromatography and mass spectrometer equipment for the in-house laboratory. In 2009, another step was taken toward internationalization, with the establishment of MASilva Cortiças do Brasil Ltda., MASilva Corks Australasia, Pty, LLP and Importadora de Corchos MASilva Chile, Lda.
The year 2011 saw the incorporation of MASilva Garzón Espanha, SL, in order to meet the demand of local wine growers, thus enabling a more direct and effective expansion in the Spanish market, which had until then been dealt with through agents.
To meet the highest demands of the local wine market, by providing better quality and service to the client, the distribution unit MASilva & Garzón, S.L. announces the opening of their 2,000 sq.m new facilities located in Logroño, Spain.
Expansion of the raw material center M. A. Silva 3 - Cortiças, S.A. to an additional 40 000 sq.m of cork bark storage area (total 70 000 sq.m).
M.A.Silva Cortiças do Brasil Ltda. obtains ISO9001 and ISO22000 certifications. M.A.Silva Corks USA (Santa Rosa, CA) expands its facilities expansion by 8,000 sq.m. This new unit exclusively uses solar power energy.
MASilva Portugal launches the OnebyOne technology in January 2016, offering customers the assurance of TCA-free corks. This fully automated process is based on cutting edge gasphase spectroscopy and is available for high end natural cork to seal ultra-premium wines. Each cork is checked one by one to detect any trace of cork taint, leaving no margin for human error.
On July 20th, 2017, the new facilities dedicated to the production of technical and sparkling wine corks were inaugurated by the President and Founder of the MASILVA Group, Manuel Silva, and by the Mayor of Santa Maria da Feira, Emídio Sousa, in Mozelos - M. A. Silva 2 - Cortiças, S.A.
As a major player in the cork industry, MASilva guarantees full traceability of the production process from the tree to the final product.
Cork processing is a sector with firm roots in the Portuguese industry and economy for at least two centuries. Led into this tradition by the founder and current president Manuel Alves da Silva, the MASilva group has been producing natural cork stoppers since 1972. Gradually over time, the several units installed abroad in the most relevant wine producing countries in the world have shaped MASilva Group into what it is today, a family owned business with a strong financial position and deep knowledge about the cork sector. At present, the main goals of the Group are to consolidate its position in mature markets and reach new developing markets, driven by the added value of natural cork. The unique characteristics of the cork become more and more distinguished in the world, thanks to the growing preference for environmentally sustainable products.
To design, produce and supply reliable natural cork stoppers that properly seal wine bottles and other alcoholic beverages, ensuring their organoleptic neutrality. Naturally, MASilva Group seeks legitimate economical results, having in mind the social responsibility to local communities in the various parts of the world where each company operates. The involvement of all players in the supply chain of the organization and their awareness about food safety for consumers as well as the sustainable management of cork forests are the main pillars of our philosophy.
